The word al-mar’atu (i.e., woman) in Arabic refers to the female counterpart of the male. Its pronunciation is imra’atu or mar’ah. It does not have a direct plural form in Arabic; instead, the words nisā’ or niswah are used.
She is the creation that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, brought into existence as a partner for man throughout his life. She was originally created from man in order to establish a more profound symmetry and a stronger bond and closeness between them. In addition, this was so that sincere affection and mercy might be attained between them, clothed in the most splendid garment and the most beautiful form.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women. And fear Allah, through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and do not sever the ties of the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you.”
(Soorah an-Nisaa 4:1)
